Wall lights are some of the most versatile lighting tools in an interior designer’s kit or homemaker’s arsenal. They can create warmth, shift focus, light a “dead” area, provide direction or light for working and reading. They are normally mounted flat on the wall and, coupled with dimmers, allowing you to create just the right ambience. They are particularly effective in bedrooms, freeing up bedside tables.
Lisebo Mokhesi, an interior designer at Ink Design Lab in Johannesburg, says lighting plays a major role in creating the right mood. Her tip is to use energy-saving lamps – “Controlling lights with dimmers creates mood while saving on your electricity bill,” she says – and by placing lights on different circuits allows them to be used independently for specific tasks. “Wall lights mounted to your headboard make for a soft, yet effective reading light.”
